A day in the life of… Pauline Coghlan, Founder of pelican story

This year we’re celebrating the people behind the brands with our new blog series ‘A day in the life of…’ We’ve asked some of the world’s most creative minds right through to the much-loved office dog what it’s like to work for a leading design brand. Read about them now, then meet them at the show this September.

As we edge ever closer to the start of the show in September, we chat to Pauline from pelican story who will be showcasing globally sourced contemporary homeware, furniture and lifestyle products that combine beauty and functionality. Pauline talks us through how alternating her surroundings is important for a productive workflow, her past background in television and her love for Instagram, cycling and a good tequila.

I wake up at…

630-7am

My typical day involves…

Strong coffee! After answering emails, I then speak with any existing makers and new suppliers. I believe I have a personal relationship with a lot of my makers and I love to work as close as possible with them, including collaborating on events. Website management – which includes uploading new products onto store, or adding a new post to my Journal Social Media & marketing – uploading images or stories to social media,; ensuring my marketing & press plans are optimised

I work best…

By alternating my surroundings. I used to work at home, however I now like to work in different offices. I generally work in two locations – Kreativ House, which is an independently run co-work space in the heart of Hackney Central. I also work at Shoreditch House.

I got into the design industry because…

It has always been a passion of mine. My background is actually in TV content acquisitions, but the passion for design, architecture and photography has always been there. Whilst, I don’t have a design background, I believe an absolute passion for something, can take you far.

I can’t get through the day without…

Coffee, email & Instagram. Instagram is such a wonderful discovery tool, there are so many talented and inspiring people out there.

My proudest work moment was…

As a very new business, I’m hoping this moment is yet to come, however during my first few months, being recognised by people already established in the industry as offering something different has been so rewarding. It just helps to re-confirm, I am doing something right, despite the early risks I’ve taken. I’m trying to curate and create something a little different and make pelican story a trusted destination.

The most challenging point of my career was…

Trying to launch the business solo. I was constantly questioning my abilities to launch the business alone. I have had amazing support from family and friends and I was also fortunate enough to have a mentor during the pre-launch days.

To relax I enjoy…

Take in an exhibition – especially modern art and photography. I also love cycling in London and the surrounding areas – I used to live in Amsterdam, so this has definitely stayed with me! I cycle deliveries to customers in selected London postcodes Yoga, ceramics and drawing classes are on my current weekly agenda. I love being able to completely switch off and I love creating things, despite the fact I may not be that good at it!

When I socialise I like to…

Eat amazing food with friends; drink a good tequila

My favourite piece of furniture at home is…

A wonderful bird shaped vintage lamp which I found in a thrift store in San Francisco – 50’s Americana kitsch! This is the piece that inspired me to create pelican story.
